Chikaramanga, revered for his role in the iconic Los Angeles-based hip hop collective Giant Panda, has brought his craft back to his hometown of Tokyo. With a prolific history in the underground hip hop scene of the early 2000s, he was a driving force behind Giant Panda's two acclaimed albums. Chikaramanga also leads the LA-based label TRES, supporting its mission to "preserve the tradition, yet stimulate the progress."
Drawing inspiration from 70s and 80s Japanese vinyl for both his beat-making and DJing, Chikaramanga enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge and passion through occasional City Pop DJ mixes. His foundation is 90s hip hop, and you can hear its influence in these mixes. His DJ sets transcend eras and continents, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience that bridges generations of music lovers—from those who grew up with the original sounds of City Pop to a new audience discovering its timeless appeal.
His latest beat album, "Progressing to the Stone Age Phase One" (TRES 2023), is available on all major digital platforms.

New to the 2024 Fuji to Hood event are music collaborations. Tokyo-based music producer, DJ and record label owner Chikaramanga curated a selection of 1970s and 1980s Japanese records and sent them to Oregon for local beat makers to sample and use. The tracks they created form the Japanese source material will be available for free downloads via a QR code on the official festival beer “Project Vinyl”, a rice lager from Level Beer that will be for sale in cans to-go only at the festival. In addition, Chikaramanga crafted an hour-long mix of Japanese “City Pop” tunes which will also be available on the Project Vinyl download.
